What Is a Same Game Parlay?
Sportsbooks promote same game parlays harder than almost anything else on the board, and convenience is not the only reason. Before you build one, it helps to know what you are actually combining, and why the payout math is not the same as a normal parlay.
What a same game parlay is
A regular parlay strings together picks from different games. A same game parlay does the same thing with every leg from one matchup: say a moneyline, the game total and a player prop, all from the same Sunday night game, wrapped into one ticket with one payout. The appeal is easy to see. You can build a specific story around the game you are watching anyway.
Why the odds are not simply multiplied
In a normal parlay the legs are independent, so the book multiplies each leg's price. SGP legs usually are not independent. Some outcomes tend to happen together, and some work against each other:
That is why an SGP usually pays less than multiplying the legs would suggest, and why some combinations get flagged as not allowed on the bet slip. When two legs are too directly linked, like two versions of the same total, the book simply will not pair them.
A worked example
The Chiefs are big home favorites on Sunday Night Football. You build three legs: Chiefs to win, the game to go over the total, and the Chiefs' top receiver over 60 yards. Each leg alone is priced near even money or a bit worse. Multiplied as if independent, that looks like roughly +550. Because all three tend to happen together, the book might offer something closer to +380.
That gap is not the book shortchanging you so much as pricing the real chance that all three land at once. Whether the offered price is fair is a separate question, and it is where most of the book's edge on SGPs lives.
