What a few cents of juice is worth over a season
One bettor, 200 spread bets of $100 each, a 104-96 record. Same picks in every row. The only thing that changes is the price.
| Price | A $100 win pays | Break-even | 104-96 result |
|---|---|---|---|
| -110 | $90.91 | 52.38% | -$145.45 |
| -105 | $95.24 | 51.22% | +$304.76 |
| -102 | $98.04 | 50.50% | +$596.08 |
Illustrative example, 200 bets risking $100 each. At $500 a bet, the gap between -110 and -102 grows to $3,707.66.
That is a $741.53 swing at $100 a bet from where the bets were placed, not what was picked. Our guide to the vig walks through the math.
What does -110 mean?
You risk $110 to win $100. The extra $10 is the book's cut, called the vig or juice. Plus odds like +150 mean a $100 bet wins $150. More in our guide to reading betting odds.
Why are the odds different at each sportsbook?
Each book sets its own prices and adjusts them based on the money it takes in. That is why the same game can be -3 at one book and -2.5 at another.
Can I bet on games that have already started?
Yes. Most books offer in-game lines that move with every play. Our live betting guide covers how that works.
