NFL Survivor Pool Strategy: How to Outlast Your Pool
In 2025, Circa Survivor in Las Vegas drew 18,718 entries at $1,000 apiece, and only five of them made it through the whole season without a loss, according to reporting from PoolGenius and Unabated. Your office pool is smaller, but the math is the same. A solid NFL survivor pool strategy is less about finding the safest team each week and more about planning the whole season.
How an NFL survivor pool works
The rules vary a little from pool to pool, so read yours before Week 1. These are the settings that change strategy the most:
- Straight up, no spread. Your team only has to win. A 1-point win counts the same as a 30-point blowout.
- One use per team. Once you pick the Bills, you cannot pick them again. By December, your best options may already be gone.
- Ties. Some pools treat a tie as a loss. Circa Survivor does, per its published rules.
- Holiday weeks. Big contests may require extra picks. Circa Survivor has 20 picks in 2026: one for each of the 18 regular-season weeks plus separate picks for the Thanksgiving and Christmas games.
- Missed picks. In most pools, no pick means you are out. Set a reminder for Thursday night games.
- Buybacks and strikes. Some office pools let you re-enter early or survive one loss. That changes how much risk you can take.
Why survivor pools are so hard to win
Every pick you make is a coin you have to keep flipping in your favor. If you somehow found an 80% favorite every week, your chance of surviving all 18 weeks would still be about 1.8%. At 75% per week it drops to about 0.56%. And nobody has 80% favorites available every week, because the best teams get used up.
That is why winning a survivor pool is not really about never losing. It is about outlasting the other entries. Once you see it that way, strategy changes.
The three things to weigh every week
Win probability: use the moneyline, not the spread
The spread tells you margin, but survivor only cares about who wins, so the moneyline is the better tool. Strip out the vig and you get a clean win probability. A -400 favorite facing a +320 underdog works out to about a 77% chance to win. A -250 favorite against +205 is about 68.5%. Pick popularity: the crowd is part of the math
Here is an illustrative example from a 100-entry pool. Forty entries take the week's biggest favorite, an 80% team. Only five take a 72% team. The other 55 spread out over other favorites.

This does not mean you should chase random underdogs. It means that when two picks are close in win probability, the one fewer people are on is often the better play, especially in bigger pools.
Future value: spend your best teams wisely
Before the season, map out each strong team's best weeks: a home game against a weak opponent is gold for survivor. If a top team has three great spots in the second half, burning it in Week 2 against an average opponent costs you later. On the other hand, do not hoard a team so long that it gets hurt or falls apart. A pick you never use has zero value.
