Tier 1: the Thunder and Spurs (1 and 2)
Oklahoma City opened 2-0 with a 116-104 win over San Antonio in a rematch of last season's West finals, when Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 (NBA.com, Sky Sports), and a 96-84 win over Denver in which his NBA-record streak of 141 straight 20-point games ended (Denver7/AP, Yahoo). The Thunder's title price has shortened from +265 in our preseason rankings to +210 at FanDuel. San Antonio is 1-2 after losses to the Thunder and to Houston in Austin, then beat Dallas 122-106 on Saturday behind 23 points from Victor Wembanyama (ABC News/AP). The market barely moved the Spurs, who are still a clear second.
Tier 2: the East contenders and Minnesota (3 to 7)
Philadelphia is 3-0, including a 114-106 win over Cleveland after trailing by 29 points, the Cavaliers' largest blown lead in the play-by-play era (ESPN, Yahoo, Washington Post). The 76ers also beat the Knicks 106-100 on New York's ring night. The defending champion Knicks are 0-2 after a 107-103 loss at Boston, yet the market still has them fourth at about 7%. Minnesota (2-0) moved up two spots to fifth, Boston (1-1) slipped one to sixth, and Toronto (2-0, with wins by 43 at Chicago and 10 at Washington) jumped from 10th to 7th.
Tier 3: playoff teams (8 to 14)
Houston is 3-0 and climbed six spots to eighth. The Rockets won 121-114 at Atlanta on Saturday without Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams, both listed out until at least October 26 by CBS Sports and ESPN. Detroit is 2-0 after rallying from 22 down to beat Boston in the opener, but Jalen Duren (hamstring) is out until at least October 27, and the Pistons fell from sixth to tenth. Miami (0-3) holds ninth on its price, and the Lakers (2-0), Denver (1-1, including a 141-135 overtime win over New Orleans), Cleveland (1-1) and Indiana (1-1) round out the tier.
Tier 4 and 5: the play-in race and the lottery (15 to 30)
Portland (2-0) rose three spots to 15th. Atlanta (2-1) beat Charlotte 128-81, the largest win in franchise history (Yahoo, ESPN). Orlando (0-2) is 18th and lost Paolo Banchero to a high ankle sprain that CBS Sports and ESPN list at four to six weeks. The bottom of the board, from Memphis down to Sacramento, is priced under 0.3% each, and the 0-3 Bucks sit 24th.
Why the market rankings differ from the standings
Three games is a small sample, so the market moves slowly. The Spurs and Knicks have a combined 1-4 record and still rank second and fourth, because their prices reflect full rosters over 82 games. Houston and Toronto moved because their wins came with real margins, while Detroit dropped on an injury rather than a loss.
