NFL Playoff Picture 2026: Seeds, Wild Cards and Every Team in the Hunt

NFL Playoff Picture 2026: Seeds, Wild Cards and Every Team in the Hunt

If the NFL season ended today, October 3, 2026, the Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings would hold the No. 1 seeds and the only first-round byes in the 2026 NFL playoff picture. That counts every game through Week 4 Thursday, when the Cleveland Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24. Below are all 14 seeds, every team still in the hunt, and how each one compares with what the betting market expects.

Where it stands
AFC: 1 Chiefs, 2 Bills, 3 Browns, 4 Jaguars, 5 Raiders, 6 Ravens, 7 Broncos.
NFC: 1 Vikings, 2 49ers, 3 Eagles, 4 Panthers, 5 Lions, 6 Bears, 7 Seahawks.
First teams out: the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants, both 2-1 and both edged out on tiebreakers.

The AFC playoff picture right now

Three AFC teams are still unbeaten, and two of them share a division. The Chiefs and Las Vegas Raiders are both 3-0 in the AFC West, so the Raiders fall to the 5 seed as the top wild card even though no AFC team has a better record. The Browns hold the 3 seed at 3-1 because a win over Pittsburgh on Thursday put them a half game ahead of the 2-1 Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North.

6Baltimore Ravens2-1Wild card, 1-0 AFC record82%vs TEN, BAL -11.5
7Denver Broncos2-1Wild card on tiebreakers over the Bengals65%at SF, DEN +2.5

The last AFC spot came down to tiebreakers. The Ravens and Bengals are both 2-1, and Baltimore wins that one on division record (0-0 against Cincinnati's 0-1). The Denver Broncos then take the 7 seed ahead of the Bengals on tiebreakers. "Playoff odds" is each team's chance to make the postseason from sportsbook make-the-playoffs prices as of October 3, 2026, explained further down.

The NFC playoff picture right now

The Vikings and San Francisco 49ers are the NFC's only 3-0 teams, and Minnesota holds the top seed with a 3-0 conference record. The strangest line on the board is the NFC South: all four teams are under .500, so the 1-2 Carolina Panthers would host a playoff game as the 4 seed because they are 1-0 in the division.

6Chicago Bears2-1Wild card, 2-1 NFC record49%vs NYJ, CHI -3.5
7Seattle Seahawks2-1Wild card on tiebreakers over the Giants68%vs LAC, SEA -7.5

Four 2-1 teams fight for three NFC wild-card spots. The Detroit Lions beat out the Chicago Bears inside the NFC North on division record, then take the 5 seed with a 1-0 conference record. The Bears get the 6 seed on a 2-1 conference record, and the Seattle Seahawks take the 7 seed over the New York Giants on tiebreakers.

In the picture now, doubted by the market

A playoff seed after three or four games says less than you might think. These four teams are in the field today, but sportsbooks give each of them less than a coin flip to still be there in January.

Cleveland Browns, AFC 3 seed
3-1, 22% playoff odds, 6% to win the AFC North
•The Browns lead the North after beating Pittsburgh, but books still price Baltimore (52%) and Cincinnati (34%) as the likelier division winners.
•Cleveland is +20,000 to win the Super Bowl, 28th on the board.
Carolina Panthers, NFC 4 seed
1-2, 26% playoff odds, 23% to win the NFC South
•The Saints are the division favorite at 40% despite the same 1-2 record.
•Carolina hosts Detroit this week as a 3.5-point underdog.
Las Vegas Raiders, AFC 5 seed
3-0, 36% playoff odds, 14% to win the AFC West
•Unbeaten, but the market still has the Chiefs (55%) and Broncos (26%) ahead of them in the division.
•Sunday's home game against Kansas City is a 4.5-point underdog spot.
Chicago Bears, NFC 6 seed
2-1, 49% playoff odds
•Close to a coin flip, and the first team out of the market's projected NFC field.
•Chicago is a 3.5-point favorite at home against the Jets.

Outside the picture, backed by the market

The flip side: a slow start has not changed the market's view of these teams much. The Los Angeles Rams are 1-2 and out of the field today, yet they have the shortest consensus Super Bowl price in the NFL (+650) and carry 70% playoff odds. The Bengals sit one tiebreaker out at 2-1 with 72%. The New England Patriots (48%) and New Orleans Saints (45%) are both 1-2 and still in the market's projected field.

Every team in the hunt

Here is everyone outside the top seven in each conference, sorted by playoff odds, with what is next on the schedule. Nobody is eliminated in early October, and the 0-3 Houston Texans still have better odds (38%) than three teams who are in the field today.

How the NFL playoff picture works

Fourteen teams make the NFL playoffs, seven from each conference. The four division winners take seeds 1 through 4, ordered by record, and the three best remaining teams in each conference are wild cards, seeded 5 through 7. Only the No. 1 seed gets a first-round bye; the 2 seed hosts the 7, the 3 hosts the 6, and the 4 hosts the 5 on Wild Card Weekend.

1
Head-to-head
If two tied teams have played each other, the winner gets the edge.
2
Division record
Used first when the tied teams share a division, which is how Baltimore and Detroit got their spots this week.
3
Common games, then conference record
Record against shared opponents, then record against teams in the same conference.
4
Strength of victory and schedule
The combined records of the teams beaten, then of all opponents, before point-based tiebreakers.

Early in the season, many ties are settled on these finer steps, so seeds 5 through 7 can flip from week to week on a single result. That is one reason the betting market is the better guide to who finishes in the field.

Where the playoff odds come from

Playoff odds on this page are built from make-the-playoffs "Yes" prices at five sportsbooks (bet365, BetMGM, DraftKings, Caesars and FanDuel) on VegasInsider's board as of October 3, 2026. We take each team's median price, convert it to an implied probability, and scale all 32 teams so they add up to the 14 real playoff spots, which removes the sportsbook margin. Division odds come from the division winner boards, where each division is a complete field that can be de-vigged directly. These are market numbers, not our own model.

If you want to bet on these races, compare prices across books first; the same team can be several points of probability apart at different shops. Our sportsbook reviews cover where to shop, and our futures betting guide explains how season-long markets work.

NFL playoff picture questions

Who is the No. 1 seed in the NFL playoff picture right now?
As of October 3, 2026, the Kansas City Chiefs (3-0) are the AFC No. 1 seed and the Minnesota Vikings (3-0) are the NFC No. 1 seed. Both would get the only first-round byes if the season ended today.
How many teams make the NFL playoffs?
Fourteen: seven per conference. Each conference sends its four division winners, seeded 1 through 4, and three wild cards, seeded 5 through 7. Only the No. 1 seed gets a bye.
Why is a 1-2 team in the NFL playoff picture?
Every division winner makes the playoffs, regardless of record. All four NFC South teams are under .500, so the 1-2 Carolina Panthers hold the NFC 4 seed as of October 3, 2026, by leading the division on a 1-0 division record.
Is there an NFL playoff predictor with odds for every team?
Yes. Our NFL playoff predictions page lists every team's market odds to make the playoffs and win its division, plus a projected bracket, and is updated weekly. As of October 3, 2026, the Buffalo Bills had the best odds at about 90%.
How often is this NFL playoff picture updated?
We update it every week of the 2026 season after Monday night's game, with the new seeds, the teams that moved in and out, and refreshed playoff odds.
