Senators vs Sabres Prediction: Odds, Goalies and Our Number for Wednesday

The Buffalo Sabres are a small home favorite over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night at KeyBank Center, -126 to -132 on the moneyline with Ottawa +105 to +112 and a total of 6.5, as of Wednesday, November 4, 2026, 12:45 PM ET. The price has moved toward Ottawa since it opened at Senators +118, Sabres -145. Our own number and Massey both make the game closer to a coin flip than the market does, which would normally put a lean on the Senators, but Ottawa is starting Samuel Ersson in goal rather than Linus Ullmark, and that swap is bigger than our edge. No lean. Here is the full Senators vs Sabres prediction from the odds, the expected-goals numbers and the goalie report.
Senators vs Sabres odds at every book

Prices are from SportsbookReview's NHL moneyline and totals boards, eight books on each. Every book has shortened Ottawa from the +118 opener, and 65% of SBR's tickets are on Buffalo, so the move toward the Senators is against the ticket count, the kind of move that usually means the money is on the other side from the crowd. The total opened 6.5 and sits there at seven of eight books with the Over at -115 to -125; one book has 5.5 with the Over at -210. Our free plays for the day are on our free picks page.
Senators vs Sabres prediction from the numbers
Our NHL number starts with MoneyPuck's team data through Tuesday. For each team we blend score- and venue-adjusted expected goals (70%) with actual goals (30%), for and against, per game, then shrink each toward the league average of 3.19 goals a game to account for a 14 to 16 game sample. Ottawa rates at 3.27 goals created and 3.12 allowed per game before shrinking; Buffalo at 3.13 and 3.37. Put them together with a 4% home bump for Buffalo and the projection is Ottawa 3.21, Buffalo 3.23, which a Poisson model turns into Ottawa 49.3% and Buffalo 50.7% with ties split toward the home team. That is 3.6 points better for Ottawa than the no-vig price. Massey Ratings lands near us: Buffalo 4-3, a 52% Sabres win, with Ottawa ranked 13th and Buffalo 19th.
| Read | Senators | Sabres | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market, vig removed | 45.7% | 54.3% | +110 / -130 consensus |
| Our expected-goals model | 49.3% | 50.7% | MoneyPuck team data through Nov 3 |
| Massey Ratings | 48% | 52% | Projected 4-3 Buffalo |
| Projected goals | 3.21 | 3.23 | Our model; total 6.44 vs 6.5 |
On the total, our 6.44 is a hair under 6.5 and Massey has exactly 6.5, so there is nothing there either way. The Over is the public side (68% of SBR tickets) and priced like it at -120 to -125.
How the Senators and Sabres got here
| Team | Record | Goals for / against | xG share | Last three |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ottawa Senators | 9-6-1 | 50 / 51 in 16 | 51.0% | L 5-6 OT @ LAK, W 5-1 @ SJS, L 3-6 @ ANA |
| Buffalo Sabres | 7-4-3 | 43 / 48 in 14 | 48.9% | W 2-0 @ SJS, W 7-6 @ ANA, W 3-2 @ LAK |
Both teams are coming off the same California trip in opposite moods. Ottawa went 1-2-1 against Vegas, Los Angeles, San Jose and Anaheim, scoring 14 and allowing 17, and Wednesday is its fifth straight road game. The Senators have the better underlying numbers of the two: 52.7 expected goals for against 49.7 against through 16 games (51.0%), with a 50-51 actual goal differential that says the finishing and the goaltending have lagged the chances. Buffalo swept the three California stops (2-0 at San Jose, 7-6 at Anaheim, 3-2 at Los Angeles) and comes home for the first time since October 21, when it lost 3-1 to Philadelphia. The Sabres have been outchanced on the season, 44.4 expected goals for and 46.5 against (48.9%), and are 43-48 in actual goals, but three of their four regulation losses came at home, and they have won four of their last seven with two of the three losses in overtime.
Senators vs Sabres goalies and injury report
| Goalie | Team | Status | GP | GA / xGA | Save % |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samuel Ersson | OTT | Confirmed starter (Daily Faceoff, 11:52 AM ET) | 7 | 19 / 15.8 | .866 |
| Linus Ullmark | OTT | Not starting | 8 | 10 / 18.3 | .945 |
| Colten Ellis | BUF | Likely starter (Daily Faceoff, 10:34 AM ET) | 5 | 14 / 15.2 | .880 |
| Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen | BUF | Not starting | 10 | 33 / 30.8 | .874 |
Goalie numbers are MoneyPuck, all situations, through Tuesday; expected goals against (xGA) is what an average goalie would have allowed on the same shots. Ersson has given up about three more goals than expected in seven starts and Ullmark about eight fewer in eight. Ellis, Buffalo's second goalie, has been a little better than expected (14 on 15.2) and Luukkonen a little worse (33 on 30.8). Daily Faceoff listed Ersson as confirmed and Ellis as likely at midday; the Sabres' morning skate report and warmups will settle Ellis. Check both teamsβ pregame reports for skater scratches; a late change in goal or to a top line is a reason to recheck the price.
