Totals did most of the moving. The three biggest shifts were all about three points, two down and one up. For the spreads, books opened Alabama and Florida at different numbers and then settled in the same place. Our explainer on why betting lines move covers how books adjust to money and news.
Alabama vs Mississippi State odds
Both teams are 4-0. Alabama beat South Carolina 49-18 last week. Mississippi State trailed Missouri 24-17 in the fourth quarter and scored the last two touchdowns to win 31-24. The market is not buying the Bulldogs as an equal: Alabama is about a 65.7% winner with the vig removed, and the total has climbed above 60, the highest of the four headline games.
Ohio State vs Iowa odds
Iowa is 4-0 after beating Michigan 20-19 on a last-play touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee, a game we broke down in our Iowa vs Michigan bad beat recap. Ohio State is 3-1 and beat Illinois 42-19 as Jeremiah Smith tied a school record with four touchdown catches. The spread has barely moved off two touchdowns. At 45.5, this is the lowest total of the four headline games, which fits Iowa's style.
Florida vs Missouri odds
No team climbed faster than Florida, which ran over No. 4 Ole Miss 52-28 behind Jadan Baugh and jumped to No. 8. We previewed that game in our Texas-Tennessee and Ole Miss-Florida preview. Missouri is coming off that late loss at Mississippi State. The Gators have moved from about -4 to -5.5 on the road, the same price Alabama is laying at Starkville.
Miami vs Clemson odds
Miami is 4-0 and beat Central Michigan 52-3 last week, with Darian Mensah throwing for 338 yards and three touchdowns. Clemson lost big at LSU in the opener and has won three straight since. The Hurricanes are still more than two touchdowns on the road, but the number has come down from the highs, and the total has dropped about three points. That combination points to a lower-scoring game than books first expected.
Other Saturday games
Notre Dame is -20.5 to -21.5 at North Carolina at noon on ESPN, against a Bill Belichick team coming off a bye, with a total of 46.5 (down from 48.5). Georgia is -25.5 against Vanderbilt. Tennessee is -6.5 against Auburn. In prime time, BYU is -5.5 to -6.5 at TCU, USC is -8.5 to -9.5 against Washington with the total up to 58.5, Texas Tech is -13.5 at Colorado, and Indiana is -24.5 at Rutgers. If you are weighing a big favorite, our guide to point spreads explains why laying three touchdowns is a different bet from picking the winner.
