*Plays Monday night, October 5. Week 5 lines as of Monday morning.
Tier 1: the Super Bowl contenders (1 to 6)
The top six did not change order from last week, and together they hold just over half of the fair title share (about 55%).
1. Los Angeles Rams (2-2)
2-2 after winning 24-20 at Philadelphia. Still the betting favorite at +600 to +650 despite the record, and favored by 2.5 over Buffalo on Monday night in Week 5.
2. Buffalo Bills (3-1)
3-1 after a 29-26 home loss to New England as 7-point favorites. Their title price drifted from +650 to +700 last week to +680 to +750 now. Wide receiver DJ Moore aggravated his shoulder injury Sunday.
3. Baltimore Ravens (3-1)
3-1 after a 24-18 win over Tennessee, but Lamar Jackson hurt his left ankle and left the stadium in a walking boot; an MRI was scheduled for Monday. Baltimore is still +800 to +900, and opened -4 at Atlanta.
4. San Francisco 49ers (4-0)
4-0 after beating Denver 24-14. Tied with Baltimore at about 8.8% fair title odds; the higher playoff price (81%) belongs to the Ravens by a hair, which settles the tie.
5. Seattle Seahawks (3-1)
3-1 after a 30-23 win over the Chargers. +850 to +950, and hosts San Francisco in Week 5 as a 2.5 to 3-point favorite.
6. Kansas City Chiefs (4-0)
4-0 after a 30-27 win at Las Vegas, with the best AFC playoff odds behind Buffalo (85%). Bye in Week 5.
Tier 2: likely playoff teams and the crowded middle (7 to 15)
Nine teams sit between about 3% and 5% fair title odds. Jacksonville is the clear leader of this group after winning 22-17 at Cincinnati, and it is the only one priced shorter than +2000.
- 7. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1, +1400 to +1600): up from 10th. The Jaguars are 64% to win the AFC South and host Philadelphia in London as 4.5-point favorites.
- 8. Chicago Bears (3-1, +2000): up from 12th after beating the Jets 23-12. Favored by 2.5 at Green Bay.
- 9. Cincinnati Bengals (2-2, +2200 to +2700): down from 7th. Ja'Marr Chase is in the concussion protocol and Tee Higgins has an adductor injury. Favored by 7 to 7.5 at Miami.
- 10. Denver Broncos (2-2, +2200): up from 11th despite a 24-14 loss at San Francisco. Cornerback Patrick Surtain II hurt his ankle; reports say the Broncos believe he avoided a long-term injury.
- 11. Detroit Lions (2-2, +2200): down from 9th after losing 32-26 at Carolina on Sunday night. Favored by 4.5 at Arizona.
- 12. Minnesota Vikings (4-0, +2200 to +2500): the lowest-ranked unbeaten team, up one spot. Favored by 1.5 at New Orleans.
- 13. Philadelphia Eagles (2-2, +2200 to +2800): the biggest drop this week, from 8th. Saquon Barkley left Sunday's loss to the Rams with a hamstring injury.
- 14. Dallas Cowboys (2-2, +2000 to +2500): unchanged after winning 34-30 at Houston. The Cowboys host Tampa Bay on Thursday night as 10 to 10.5-point favorites.
- 15. New England Patriots (2-2, +2700 to +3000): unchanged in rank, but their playoff odds jumped from 48% to 63% after the win at Buffalo.
Tier 3: long shots with a path (16 to 23)
Each of these teams is priced between +4000 and +15000. Most are 2-2 or 1-2, and the market gives every one of them less than a 45% chance to make the playoffs.
- 16. Indianapolis Colts (2-2, +5500 to +6600): 37% to make the playoffs; at PIT, PIT -1.5/-2.5.
- 17. Green Bay Packers (2-2, +6000 to +6600): 30% to make the playoffs; vs CHI, CHI -2.5.
- 18. Houston Texans (0-4, +4000 to +7500): 27% to make the playoffs; at TEN, HOU -6.5.
- 19. Las Vegas Raiders (3-1, +6600 to +7500): 36% to make the playoffs; at NE, NE -3.5.
- 20. New Orleans Saints (1-2, plays Monday night, +5500 to +8000): 45% to make the playoffs; vs MIN, MIN -1.5.
- 21. Carolina Panthers (2-2, +9000 to +12500): 32% to make the playoffs; Bye.
- 22. Atlanta Falcons (1-2, plays Monday night, +10000 to +12500): 26% to make the playoffs; vs BAL, BAL -3.5/-4.
- 23. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-2, +11000 to +15000): 24% to make the playoffs; vs IND, PIT -1.5/-2.5.
Tier 4: the 3-1 outliers and the rest (24 to 29)
This tier holds the two teams where the market and the standings disagree the most. The New York Giants (3-1) lead the NFC East and are ranked 24th. The Cleveland Browns (3-1) lead the AFC North and are ranked 28th.
- 24. New York Giants (3-1, +12500 to +15000): 21% to make the playoffs; at WAS, WAS -3/-3.5.
- 25. Washington Commanders (1-3, +10000 to +15000): 15% to make the playoffs; vs NYG, WAS -3/-3.5.
- 26. Los Angeles Chargers (0-4, +10000 to +15000): 12% to make the playoffs; vs DEN, DEN -3.5.
- 27. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4, +12500 to +20000): 13% to make the playoffs; at DAL, DAL -10/-10.5.
- 28. Cleveland Browns (3-1, +15000 to +22500): 24% to make the playoffs; at NYJ, NYJ -1.5/-2.5.
- 29. New York Jets (1-3, +30000 to +35000): 12% to make the playoffs; vs CLE, NYJ -1.5/-2.5.
Tier 5: the bottom three (30 to 32)
The Arizona Cardinals (1-3) are 30th at +50000 to +75000. The Tennessee Titans (0-4) are 31st at +100000. The Miami Dolphins (0-4) are 32nd at +100000 to +200000. The Dolphins and Titans are both 0-4; Tennessee is a 6.5-point home underdog to the 0-4 Texans in Week 5.
Why the market rankings differ from the standings
Four weeks is a small sample, and futures prices lean on roster strength, injuries and schedule as much as on record. That is how a 2-2 Rams team can sit first while the 3-1 Giants and Browns sit 24th and 28th. The market also reacts fast to injuries: Baltimore's price held at +800 to +900 on Monday morning because Lamar Jackson's MRI result was not known yet, so expect a move once it is.
